PVR Brand Story

PVR Brand Story is a comprehensive researched story on the brand’s history and Identity development process. Read on to learn important nuggets of information on how the business developed such an impeccable identity and loyalty among its customers.
PVR Full Form
PVR is an acronym that stands for Priya Village Roadshow. PVR brand is one of the largest and most popular multiplexes cinema chains in India. Since its inception in 1997, the brand has redefined the cinema industry and the way people watch movies in the country.
I was surprised to learn what this acronym stood for as it always sounded to me like some western brand but it is proudly our own homegrown desi brand.
Intrigued by the local roots of this popular cinema brand I learned some fascinating facts about it.
History of the PVR brand
The company was started as Priya Cinema in Vasant Vihar in South Delhi by current owner Ajay Bijli‘s father in 1978. Later, Ajay Bijli made it a joint venture of Priya Exhibitors Private Limited and an Australian mass media & entertainment company Village Roadshow Limited in 1995 with 60:40 ratio. Thus the brand PVR came into existence and began its commercial operations in June 1997.
Headquartered in Gurgoan the company currently operates a cinema circuit of 800 Screens at 170 Properties in 69 Cities (21 states & UTs).
Designers behind the Brand PVR
The contribution of artists & designers involved in brand strategy & identity design plays a significant role in the success of the brand. The design is a tangible asset. It is something that can be perceived and is at the front centre of customer interaction with your brand. A good design can attract loyal customers to your brand. Designers try hard to connect your audience emotionally to your brand by building strategies and designs that motivates your customer to adore your brand and take action.
Interestingly the brand identity of PVR was done by a New Delhi based creative agency named Tree Design.
I believe Tree Design has done an impeccable job with the identity design of PVR brand. The entire brand experience from their websites to brochures, to adverts, to packaging design has been crafted to give a premium feel.
A Look at PVR Packaging Designs
The PVR packaging design is modern, timeless, minimalist and feels premium. It is something that makes customers pay a ridiculous amount of Rs 400 for a pack of popcorn that you would get at a street vendor for just Rs 20.
This is simply the power of good design and aesthetics.

One of the catchy pieces of design for PVR is Packaging for soft drinks that showcase iconic film personalities as beautifully finished caricatures, along with some little known fact about each.

Not only does the PVR packaging carry forward the brand’s heritage of good taste, but it also connects emotionally with the moviegoer.
The Style Guide
In order to ensure their compliance within the organisation and by PVR’s external partners, Tree Design, the agency behind the brand identity of PVR decided to document the PVR brand guidelines in an A4 sized 120-page Style Guide.
Designed in PVR’s brand colours, it provides exhaustive information regarding the main logo (and sub-brand logos) on a range of uses offline (including outdoors) and online along with colour and size guidelines as well as a list of dos and don’ts.
Down below are a view of some pages from the style guide document. This document is a great reference for anyone working on a Style Guide documentation for any brand.
